Behavior Management
If you were to step into my classroom at any point during the year, you would probably observe me using a pre-determined, class-wide behavior management system such as a color chart and a classroom "Pom-Pom" incentive. Behavior would be recoded on a weekly or daily chart that would be included in a take home folder or agenda. Daily communication is going home with how each student is performing everyday.
My current approach to behavior management reflects the core principles of Positive Discipline and Love and Logic. I am a strong believer that social skills, much like academic skills, should be explicitly taught, practiced, and reinforced in order to support the development of personal responsibility. I also believe that consistent disruptive behaviors demonstrate a need within a child--whether it be for attention, remediation, or a more challenging curriculum--that must be identified and addressed with patience and support, not with punishment. While specific behavioral norms for my classroom will vary depending on the age of children with whom I work, every student will be expected to follow my number 1 rule:
Respect yourself, respect others, and respect your school.
I also like the motto at my daughters' elementary school and we reinforce it at home and they say, "Own It, Take Care of It, and Change Your Behavior."
